What is Whiskey?

Well, we might as well start here. Whiskey is essentially alcohol distilled from fermenting grain mash. The one exception – being corn (Bourbon).

Whiskey must be bottled at over 40% Alcohol to be called Whiskey.

What’s with the E? Whiskey, Whisky.

Geography. Colour, color, organise, organize – generally, American made will be with an E, Scottish, Canadian, Japanese – no E.

What is Scotch?

    Generally (not always) made from malted Barley
  • Must be aged in oak casks for no less than 3 years
  • Must have ABV at less than 94.8%
  • Must be 100% made in Scotland

What is Bourbon?

The name, Bourbon, comes from an area known as Old Bourbon, around what is now Bourbon County, Kentucky.

  • Must be at least 51% corn mash
  • Must be made in the United States
  • Must be distilled to no more than 80% alcohol
  • Must be aged in new charred oak barrels
  • No minimum aging period – unless called Straight Bourbon – then 2 year minimum

What is Tennessee Whiskey?

What is Rye?

  • Traditionally Canadian Whiskey would be Rye – but not always the case
  • American Rye must be no less than 51% Rye
  • Must be distilled to no more than 80% alcohol

  • Must be aged in new charred oak barrels

What is Irish Whiskey?

  • Must be made in Ireland
  • Must be made from yeast-fermented grain mash in such a way that the distillate has an aroma and flavor derived from the materials used
  • Must be aged for at least three years in wooden casks
