A trip to the top of the Coromandel

To me, the true Coromandel is only reached once you have passed through, well, Coromandel - actually - even higher - with Colville (northernmost town of any note on the peninsula) representing a homecoming of sorts.

PracMed Stop The Bleed Course

Hopefully, by now, I have gotten across the importance of first aid training to all of you. This is not just for shooters or hunters, or parents (I had to hook some food out of my 4 years olds choaking face last night) - but everyone - knowing what to do is 'basic dude stuff' as Patrick McNamara would say.

Raglan via the back roads!

It was time to head away on another mini-adventure. While not necessarily looking for narly trails, I did want to at least get off tar-seal. So, after a bit of research online, I decided on a trip down to Raglan via Port Waikato.

A trip to Hot Water Beach in the Defender

Two of my oldest and very best friends have long worked at holiday camps. Previously the Parkiri Beach Holiday Camp, and more previously, the Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. For many, many years I have tried to regularly escape Auckland out to see them, and in the last few, the girls have been coming along as well.

Sika Show 2015

The Sika Show 2015 was held this year at the Taupo Events Centre, just a stone's throw away from the famous Lake Taupo, a beautiful resort town that draws tourists from all over. At 8:35am, crowds were already filling up the car park in front of the event hall, all eager to get in.

Deer Processing Course

Range Report – 15/06/15

It was a grey and wet day - with a couple of showers threatening to soak us - however, the heavy rain held off and I had a chance to have a play with a pile of new bits and pieces!

Bush Bash – Off Track Navigation

Like any skill, off track navigation needs to be practised. If you don't, you start to forget basic concepts and you simply get slow and rusty.

Processing Deer – Hunts Course

We were there to learn about processing deer - somewhat an important skill should you be out in the bush and actually manage to shoot one.

HUNTS Navigation Course

As part of the Deer Stalkers Hunts Course I recently spent the day in the Karamatura Park finding my way around.

Baitlining – Ark In the Park

We made a quick excursion into the Waitakere today to refresh the baits in the Possum traps.

An overview of an awesome Sako Carbonlight / Swaro Scope setup…

The Sako Carbonlight remains one of my favourite lightweight factory guns. It's build quality is phenomenal, its function sublime. While I get to setup and shoot a vast array of firearms, I am always happy to see a Sako turn up, because, with the right ammo, it is going to shoot! This 6.5 Creedmoor was no exception.

Avoiding spoilt meat – some causes

There is a wide amount of reasons meat gets spoiled in the field - ranging from a little gamey tasting to a rank rotten mess. Take your time, do it right, enjoy the results.
