A trip to the top of the Coromandel

To me, the true Coromandel is only reached once you have passed through, well, Coromandel - actually - even higher - with Colville (northernmost town of any note on the peninsula) representing a homecoming of sorts.

PracMed Stop The Bleed Course

Hopefully, by now, I have gotten across the importance of first aid training to all of you. This is not just for shooters or hunters, or parents (I had to hook some food out of my 4 years olds choaking face last night) - but everyone - knowing what to do is 'basic dude stuff' as Patrick McNamara would say.

Raglan via the back roads!

It was time to head away on another mini-adventure. While not necessarily looking for narly trails, I did want to at least get off tar-seal. So, after a bit of research online, I decided on a trip down to Raglan via Port Waikato.

A trip to Hot Water Beach in the Defender

Two of my oldest and very best friends have long worked at holiday camps. Previously the Parkiri Beach Holiday Camp, and more previously, the Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. For many, many years I have tried to regularly escape Auckland out to see them, and in the last few, the girls have been coming along as well.

Toddler Tramping – Arataki Nature Trail

We didn't quite make it last time - so this weeks walk was the Arataki Nature Trail - a short walk that features an excellent opportunity to identify several of New Zealand's most common trees right next to each other.

My new tramping partner

Took my little girl out for our first bush walk. We had been out before - but only around Mt Albert and Western Springs - this was the first decent walk with here in the backpack.

Sika Show 2015

The Sika Show 2015 was held this year at the Taupo Events Centre, just a stone's throw away from the famous Lake Taupo, a beautiful resort town that draws tourists from all over. At 8:35am, crowds were already filling up the car park in front of the event hall, all eager to get in.

Deer Processing Course

The Bloke's first ever practical seminar was a morning course on processing and butchering a deer. Richard at Balnagown was kind enough to host us and...

Range Report – 15/06/15

It was a grey and wet day - with a couple of showers threatening to soak us - however, the heavy rain held off and I had a chance to have a play with a pile of new bits and pieces!

Bush Bash – Off Track Navigation

Like any skill, off track navigation needs to be practised. If you don't, you start to forget basic concepts and you simply get slow and rusty.

Processing Deer – Hunts Course

We were there to learn about processing deer - somewhat an important skill should you be out in the bush and actually manage to shoot one.

HUNTS Navigation Course

As part of the Deer Stalkers Hunts Course I recently spent the day in the Karamatura Park finding my way around.

Baitlining – Ark In the Park

We made a quick excursion into the Waitakere today to refresh the baits in the Possum traps.

Welcome Flat Hut

Heaven on Earth? Quite possibly. And we got to spend 2 weeks there!

The Tikka Strata in 300WSM – one gun to rule them all?

The Tikka T3X Superlite is a familiar firearm to many New Zealand Hunters. Take the 'standard' T3X, flute the barrel and you have the Superlite. I recently had a Strada to set up for a client and took the opportunity (with the client's permission of course) to have a bit of a play.

Backcountry Hut Etiquette for Hunters and Trampers

While the ultimate, of course, is having a remote bivy (small hut) to just yourself and your mates, for some of the more accessible and bigger huts, there is a very good chance you are going to be sharing a hut with other trampers and hunters. As ambassadors for tramping, hunting, and just being nice human beings, there are some basic principles we should all be applying A lot of this comes down to one simple principle - consideration for others. Consideration for others is the simplest and best guide for co-inhabiting a hut. It is not a bad starting point for humanity either. This article puts forward some simple considerations and pointers for the next time you find yourself in a shared hut.

Rolife Ferris Wheel – a DIY Music Box

One thing about the lockdown with kids - you get to play with toys more! With two little ones in the house, we have been looking for options to keep them engaged and busy. When my partner turned up with a couple of these I was intrigued.

The Svord Santoku

The Santoku style knife has become rather popular in the last few years - it's almost safe to say it is the hipster hunter knife of choice. 😉 So, what is the Santoku knife, what benefit (if any) does it provide, and why should you consider picking up one of the phenomenal Svord made ones?
